Zonal Clamber Selection Tips
The judges will basically be looking to mark you on the following points:
The selected statement is uncommon: That means, that if you have chosen a statement that is chosen by many more people, you run a high risk. Either you bore the judges and the audience to their bones or you stand a chance to prove to the world on how different you can be, and how interesting your argument can be, inspite of many others having chosen the same statement as you.
Performance of the team: It is not sufficient that one member of the team performs extremely well, and the other does not match up. The team is selected on the basis of the aggregate of marks scored by both the members. If one member scores distinctively and the other scores below average, the aggregate would show just an above-average performance of the team which may fail the team from getting selected.
Time Management: Each team member is given a maximum of two minutes. Even one statement spilling out after the last bell will be ascertained as sheer indiscipline and failure to conform to the rules and inability to perform within limits. Most judges are extremely intolerant to arguments that extend beyond the time limit.
Preparation, information and inputs: It is only in the Zonal Clamber that a team gets to prepare, and prepare really well at that. A well-planned and prepared argument spiced with humour, filled with examples, statistics, quotations, references and other information would attract more marks.
Language: Verbattle does not look for perfect English. It looks for a good and winnable argument, in decent English, fairly free of grammatical errors, in a kind of presentation that is not flowery and without intimidating vocabulary. Simple language with a lot of clarity in a good voice would help the performer better in scoring more marks.
