Process

STEP 1

Invitation

A personal letter from the Founder and Chief Mr. Deepak Thimaya shall be sent to heads of schools. The letter describes the importance of the role played by Verbattle in making a difference to the life and the future of a child and youth. However, it is not imperative that only the schools that have received an invitation are allowed to participate.

STEP 2

Tele calling

Tele-callers who are part of the Verbattle team will call the heads of school who were sent a letter of invitation about the response to the invitation as well as the participation from the school.

STEP 3

Delivery of Kits and visit by Verbattle Team Members

A Verbattle Kit containing Application Forms, specific publicity material, and a copy of a film will be couriered or delivered to the school office. A Verbattle representative will meet the principal or the concerned staff and extend a personal invitation, as well as clarify and clear up questions and provide more details.

STEP 4

Enquiry through Tele callers

All the interested schools find teams that would like to participate and motivate the prospective students. They also provide information to the selected mentor teacher. Schools will help in the registration process and assist in the smooth completion of the registration through the tele-callers of the Verbattle team.

STEP 5

Team visit with posters

A team of Verbattle resource people visit interested schools to meet the mentor teacher. The interested students are instructed on the conduct of Verbattle and learn some winning secrets. A few instructional films along with a formal Power Point Presentation will also be shown.

HOW DOES THE COMPETITION HAPPEN?

INTRA SCHOOL SELECTION

Most schools conduct intra-school competition in debate and speech to select the best team. Select intra-school activities aimed at sending the best teams to Verbattle involve participation of thousands of students.

MENTOR SELECTION

Schools that have previously participated take extra care to prepare their students after the selection.

ZONAL CLAMBER

A school is allowed to send a maximum of five teams per category. The teams are restricted to five, only to facilitate room for more schools to participate from all the zones.Unlike the previous years, the zonal clamber itself will mark the beginning of the competition. Instead of one team coming to stage for debate, this time we will have groups of three teams debating. The best out of the three will move to skirmish and the other two teams will be eliminated.

The teams will have two members each in a team. An ideal team would consist of the members who are capable of speaking any side of the argument at the shortest notice of time. The students selected for the Zonal Clamber prepare on any one of the fifty Zonal Clamber debate statements announced on the Verbattle website. It is compulsory that out of the two students, one student speaks defending the statement and the other prepares to oppose the statement.

The teams will have 2 members each in a team and an ideal team would consist of the members who are capable of speaking any side of the argument at the shortest notice of time. The students selected for the Zonal Clamber prepare on any one of the 50 Zonal Clamber debate statements announced on the Website. It is compulsory that out of the two students, one student speaks defending the statement and the other, prepares to oppose the statement.

The purpose would be to select the top eighty-one teams based on the right combination of the team. This combination includes a sense of team members, their presentation skills, body language, voice, knowledge, vocabulary, attitude, time management and engagement of the audience. The combination will be referred as Verbattle essentials hereafter.

Skirmish

The Skirmish will be held in Bangalore with a total number of eighty-one teams.

The debate statement for the Skirmish

Teams for the debate will be announced 36 hours before the event. Students need to be completely aware, well informed, and insightful in all the 27 debate statements announced in advance. The schedule would be announced 24 hours prior to the event. Two hours before each slot of debate, the debate statement assigned to each debate group will be picked up by way of lotto.

The best one out of the three teams in every debate group will move ahead to Combat stage.

The Jury consisting of three members, in consultation with the Chief Resource person, the Founder of Verbattle, will deliberate and decide the winners per debate. They will ensure that the selected teams qualify based on not just a few but the required aptitude in all the Verbattle essentials.

At the end of 27 debates conducted with 81 teams, ultimately 27 of the best teams are selected to move on to the Combat Stage.

Combat

For this level, the debate topics are not provided, but nine subjects are listed. The purpose would be to select the top nine out of 27 teams based on the Verbattle essentials. The selected nine teams will move ahead to Confrontation stage. Two hours before each slot of debate, the debate statement is assigned to each debate. Three teams each will be assigned to nine different subjects by way of lotto.

Rounds per Debate

The debates are held for the 27 teams, each team getting one minute per round with a total of five rounds, making it five minutes each per team. There will be an additional round where the Mentor Teacher of the participating team will ask a question to either one of the opposing teams with the purpose of exposing the lack of preparation, lack of knowledge, or weakness in arguments. This is one round where it could be testing the prospects of a team that may have otherwise performed very well for the first five rounds.

Confrontation

In the confrontation stage, nine subjects are listed. Two hours before each slot of debate, the debate statement is assigned to each debate. Three teams belonging respectively to three subjects will be assigned to the three debate groups by way of lotto. Each one of the nine teams gets one minute per round.
